About Me

Hi! I’m Jasper and I am running for UBC’s Board of Governors and re-election to the Senate. I’ve been advocating for students ever since my first year at UBC. I started by volunteering in the Arts Undergraduate Society’s Equity and Inclusion department and in the Disabilities United Collective (DUC), serving as DUC’s advocacy committee chair and eventually running to be DUC Vice-President Academic and University Affairs. Most recently, I’ve served as one of your Student Senators and as DUC’s Co-president.

Over the last year as your student senator, I successfully:
  • Fought to get student discipline and academic standing appeals hearings restarted after an over 6-month hiatus;
  • Pushed for the creation of a working group in the Senate to review policies V-102 (Examination Hardships and Clashes) and V-103 (Use of Formal Examination Periods) to be more flexible for students, secured myself a seat on the working group, and further pushed to increase non-senate student representation on the working group, including from the AMS;
  • Lobbied the chair of the Teaching and Learning committee, along with other student senators, to begin discussing extending the add/drop deadline in the committee; and
  • Advocated for changes to the draft policy on Academic Freedom to more strongly support students’ academic freedom.
In the faculty of Arts, I successfully fought to add student seats to the Arts Curriculum Committee, Faculty of Arts Council, and Arts Strategic Plan Advisory Committee, two of which would otherwise have had zero student representation. I used one of these seats to successfully advocate for the faculty to commit to increasing undergraduate research opportunities, with the faculty later submitting an application to the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Expansion Steering Committee and securing $100,000 in undergraduate research funding.

As VP AUA and then Co-President of the UBC Disabilities United Collective, I was able to secure tens of thousands of dollars for accessibility initiatives; advocate for improvements to CfA processes, including invigilator training, accommodated exams, and advisor feedback mechanisms; and worked with the Director of the CfA to get a list of example accommodations to be listed on the CfA website.

I have been able to accomplish a lot for students at UBC, but there is a lot of work left to do. I have the experience and the expertise to continue to successfully fight for students, and if re-elected to the Senate and elected to the Board of Governors, I will continue to do just that.
